Federal Finance Minister Schäuble signs convention clamping down on tax avoidance

On 7 June 2017, 67 states including Germany signed the Multilateral Instrument (MLI), a historic step towards combating legal tax avoidance.

Germany’s G20 presidency

Germany will be holding the presidency of the G20 in 2017. The summit of the heads of state and government and representatives of international organisations will be held in Hamburg on 7 and 8 July 2017. A number of G20 ministers’ conferences are scheduled to take place prior to this. The G20 Foreign Ministers met in Bonn on 16 and 17 February 2017. The summit and ministers’ meetings will provide an opportunity to discuss current international challenges and to raise awareness of new issues in international affairs.

OECD Week a great success

This year’s OECD Week (6 – 8 June) was a great success. It began on 6 and 7 June with the OECD Forum, where business people, policymakers, academics and representatives of civil society discussed new concepts and options for shaping policies under the heading “bridging divides”. The OECD Ministerial Council was held on 7 and 8 June, partly overlapping with the OECD Forum. Germany was represented by State Secretary Machnig. The ministers and representatives discussed the OECD’s future work and adopted a closing statement.

Industry in the digital age

On 24 April 2017, at the OECD workshop on “Going Digital: The Future of Industry and Jobs”, the Director for Industrial Policy at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, Markus Heß, presented Germany’s strategy for implementing Industrie 4.0, focusing on the political objectives, the current challenges and the initial results of measures already implemented in Germany.

OECD Health Ministerial on 16 and 17 January 2017

The OECD health forum took place on 16 January, followed by the OECD Health Ministerial entitled Putting People at the Centre: The Future of Health. The conference focused on such topics as expanding patient-centred care, health care spending, new technologies and integrating data and big data into the health care system. Germany was represented by Health Minister Hermann Gröhe.

Giving Citizens a Voice – €700,000 project to strengthen democracy in Tunisia and Morocco

On 14 November 2016, Margitta Wülker-Mirbach, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Federal Republic of Germany to the OECD, and Rolf Alter, OECD Director, signed a contract by which the Federal Foreign Office will provide €700,000 to the OECD project Giving Citizens a Voice in Morocco and Tunisia.
